Olivia Lake is talented, creative and has been gifted with the ability to design and produce anything of a crafty nature. Mostly self-taught, she attributes many of her artistic skills, resourcefulness and attention to detail to the training and exposure to influential people in her life, such as Robert Bateman, Susan Underwood, Holly Carr, Suzanne Prendergast and her art teacher from high school, but mostly to her mom, Alexandra Lake, goldsmith/artisan and horse trainer, her father, Robert Barnard, carpenter and residential designer/drafter, and her grandmother, Elizabeth Rago, English school owner. Olivia Lake was born on Salt Spring Island in 1975. She has lived in B.C mostly, but has also lived in Alberta, and Olympia, WA. She has volunteered as a chaperone and a teacher in Queretaro, Mexico and Victoria, B.C. She is also an author, designer, illustrator, poet, photographer, and publisher of several books. She graduated from high school with honors in art and won the Rocky View School Division Art Award for a paper mache mask. She has trained at South Puget Sound Community College, ICS, the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and others. Olivia Lake has displayed her works online, in local galleries and venues, in Alberta and she is a contributing artist to the Brooklyn Art Library in N.Y. She works mostly in acrylic, ink, colored pencil, watercolor and mixed media. Olivia’s work has been described as beautiful, singular glimpses of nature, thought provoking, spatially aware and very professional.

Artist Statement
"I have enjoyed (since a very young age) creating with my hands; and expressing my feelings and emotions through creating poetry and art. When I have a vision I also find these very constructive ways of healing and satisfying my innate need to see inspirations through to completion. My partner recently said to me, “you have enough inspiration for all of us”. This said, after designing and making my own shoes and summer dress. I use to spend countless hours playing dress up and wrapping cloth and towels around myself, then drawing out each design. If I could create something with it (didn’t really matter what) I would.
I like the versatility of acrylic paints and enjoy using ink, colored pencil and watercolor together for illustrations. I’m not afraid to experiment with these media or incorporate new ones. I find color and contrast important components of my works. I enjoy being able to capture the mood or spirit of a moment and I have a sense of closure when finished and know the work is done because it will look complete to me. What I enjoy most about the stages of project development during creating works is the initial inspiration, designing it, getting my hands dirty and the successful completion of the work.”
